THIS BELOW-GRADE RESTAURANT IS PART OF A HOTEL’S HIGH SPIRITS
As soon as it opened, The Commoner became one of the liveliest restaurants and night spots in Pittsburgh’s Central Business District. It is a key piece of the Hotel Monaco, an adaptive reuse of the striking Duquesne Light Building (1903).
Strada was also part of the team for the overall project, the major goal of which was to activate the hotel at all hours. The 120-seat restaurant and bar of The Commoner play an important role in this objective, drawing guests with a cozy, underground vibe and elevated pub cuisine. Black steel columns and the glowing expo kitchen complete the mood. Strada served as the architect of record for The Commoner and Hotel Monaco as part of a design team that included Gensler, Beleco Design, Mark Zeff, and Ohm Lighting.
