The Portal

Reconnecting a Community

The Portal draws the user up from the street corner and moves them through a new pedestrian corridor that connects the Larimer neighborhood directly into the heart of the Bakery Square campus.

_
Site Plan

The Portal experience shortens pedestrian travel distance to the heart of Bakery Square from 525 feet to 165 feet, re-engaging the surrounding neighborhoods of East Liberty, Larimer and Shadyside by creating a new connection.

_
Existing Condition

An asphalt parking lot and electrical transformers, in addition to a massive retaining wall, created an uninviting utilitarian conditions.

Site Transformation

The barren site has been transformed through regrading the hillside to reduce the impact of the retaining wall. Lush plantings and increased visibility enhance the pedestrian experience along East Liberty Boulevard.

Bird’s Eye Overview

With a focus on pedestrian comfort, accessibility was the priority. A nine foot rise from corner to corner is mitigated by an axial ramp that directs people to The Portal passageway, containing an evolving art gallery showcasing local community artists.

The Connection Point

The top of the ramp frames two views – one down to the bustling main intersection, and the other into The Portal passageway.

Programmed Passageway

The interior Portal is a local community art gallery that is designed to engage with the outdoors. Operable garage doors on both ends of the corridor create a passive cooling environment during warm months.

Art in Action

Proceeds from art sales benefit the Larimer Consensus Group, which focuses on affordable housing, economical development, environmental, social and public safety issues.

Past Meets Present

Laser-cut dandelions inspired by Nabisco’s classic Oreo cookie screen the electrical equipment and playfully join with the “Chrome Dino”, connecting the past and future of the site.
