Fueling curiosity through real-life lab environments

The University City Science Center’s FirstHand Lab program serves Philadelphia youth by sparking an interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) disciplines through after-school programs.

FirstHand’s mission is to provide Philadelphia’s curious minds access to the knowledge and resources of the Science Center. In relocating to 3675 Market, the University City Science Center had a vision to more than double the size of its FirstHand Lab program. They sought a fun, tech-oriented environment that would invigorate young minds and enhance their interests in STEAM.

Strada’s response to this mission and vision was thoughtfully designed spaces providing students with immersive experiences to demonstrate that science can be fun. At FirstHand, students have access to real-life lab environments including wet labs, a maker space, and a digital technology studio. Lessons are brought to life through engaging projects and experiments alongside scientists and educators in spaces designed to empower future scientists.
