120 YEARS OF CHARACTER RECRAFTED FOR MODERN LIFESTYLES IN AN ICONIC BURNHAM BUILDING

For more than 120 years, 300 Sixth Avenue has been part of the story of downtown Pittsburgh.

Originally designed by Daniel Burnham in 1904 for McCreery & Co., the building began as a bustling department store before becoming office space and, eventually, the headquarters of GNC. Today, it has been given a new chapter as LiveWell Apartments, with 253 studios and one-, two-, and three-bedroom homes.

The transformation was a chance to bring new life to a historic building while holding onto the character that makes it special. More than 600 new windows, updated building systems, and new residential spaces were carefully woven into the existing structure, while original details like the glazed terra-cotta façade, high ceilings, and Puddler mosaic mural were preserved and celebrated. Retail spaces along Sixth and Wood Streets remain part of the project, keeping the building connected to the life of downtown. The result is a place where Pittsburgh’s past and present come together under one roof, and a testament to downtown buildings that were thought impossible to convert to residential.

Authenticity matters, timeless matters. We don’t want to eat chemical foods any more, we want to eat real food. We want to live in real places and this building is time-tested.
