The David A. Bresler Dental Student Center experienced a complete transformation on the fourth floor of the Old Dental School Building at Temple. The nearly 18,000 SF renovated space provides a welcoming retreat for the dedicated, hardworking dental students of Kornberg. Serving as a touchdown site for a quick bite between classes or an evening study session with classmates, the new Student Center keeps pace with the busy lifestyle of its users.
Strada took advantage of the newly replaced windows in the space to create an inviting, colorful Cafe/Lounge. The design team worked closely with the Dean to develop a finish scheme that would combine the character of the donor, a modern aesthetic for attracting new students, and a timeless appearance. An exciting mural by local artist Gloss Black is a central focal point at the entry. A convenience store/cafe opens to the lounge space, giving students a perfect place for a pit stop and a 500 sq. ft. catering kitchen is an added amenity.
The design program also included an IT service desk and a Digital Learning Lab. The IT service desk, with affiliated offices, is positioned just off the corridor entryway offering specialized software/IT service to dental students. The IT Service Center serves as the bridge from the Cafe/Lounge to the Digital Learning Lab. This state-of-the-art lab space features one large flexible classroom with integrated computing systems, and 7 smaller meeting rooms for conferences, smaller breakouts, proctoring or study groups.
Completing the renovation on the north end, a Health Studio supplies a much needed respite space for students to re-center and refocus. Forging the path for the Fourth Floor, the Student Life Center sets a bright and optimistic tone for the future of the Kornberg School of Dentistry.
